Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey is Indigenous Rights! The task I have to complete is to become more familiar with some of these amazing indigenous communities. Once you have finished learning about these groups, please choose the two that interest you the most. On your blog tell us the names of the two groups that you chose and then tell us at least two interesting facts about each group. To earn full points, you must provide two facts about both groups - 4 facts in total.
The two groups that I found the most interesting were the Inuit and Papuan people. Two facts I learned about the Inuit was The majority of their population lives in 51 communities spread across Inuit Nunangat, the Inuit homeland passed 35 percent of Canada’s landmass and 50 percent of its coastline. The Inuit have lived in their homeland since time immemorial. Their communities are among the most culturally resilient in North America, and despite their small population, Inuit communities have produced world-renowned musicians and artists and our leaders have helped advance the global struggle for Indigenous self-determination and human rights. Today Inuit occupy a number of professions in the arts, medical field, government, and academia.
Now the two facts that I learned about the Papuan People was The indigenous population is almost entirely Melanesian, though there are small Polynesian outlying communities north of Bougainville. There are significant ethnic distinctions between population groups in different parts of the country. And my second fact is the overwhelming majority of the population is Christian, although traditional beliefs remain very strong and reports of religious discrimination are rare. Baha’is from the second-largest religious group, with local leaders claiming up to 40,000 followers. What were the two amazing indigenous communities you found the most interesting?

Kia Ora Bella,
ReplyDeleteThe Inuit and Papuan people have such incredible cultures, so different to our own. You’ve done an amazing job summarising some intriguing facts about each indigenous community, and I really like the pictures you have chosen to represent them (don’t forget to cite them).
The Inuit people are incredible aren’t they! Living in such a cold environment they built igloos to block the harsh winds and pursued hunting and gathering more so than farming because it was more sustainable for them. I didn’t know they occupied so much of the Canadian coastline, but did you know that 89% of Greenland’s population has descended from the Inuit people?
The Papuan people are equally as amazing. They live in such a different environment again to the Inuit. I didn’t know most of their population is Christian yet they still remain traditional beliefs. How cool to integrate the two. Do you know any more spectacular facts?
Keep up the amazing work!
Happy blogging,
