Dear Jacinda!

Hi Everyone,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is to write a letter to Jacinda that includes the issue you have chosen, why you have chosen it, and what you would like our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to do about it. This task was really fun and I hope that Jacinda Ardern gets the chance to read my blog! Here is the letter I wrote.

Dear Jacinda,
It is a pleasure to be writing this letter to you. My name is Bella and I have recently turned twelve. During literacy at school, I have been learning a lot about refugees and how they are being forced to cross national boundaries and cannot return home safely. My point is that I would like you too let more refugees into New Zealand and help keep them safe. I know that Each year, New Zealand accepts 750 refugees, increasing to 1,000 in July 2018, as part of an agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, but in my opinion, I think that is not enough.

I believe that New Zealand should accept more refugees because the refugees are fleeing the war-torn area in order to seek a better life for their families. Countries like New Zealand have to do more to show support to the Syrian refugees and help bring order to the Middle East, as we are one of the safest countries in the world.

This time, New Zealand should step up and offer to take some more of those refugees. They're not that different to us. Not long ago they were jetting off to beach holidays just like we do. They bought designer clothes, repainted their houses, and wondered if it was time to upgrade the car.

It is time New Zealand stepped up to help refugees fleeing Syria. Photo / GettyPlease consider my thought of opinion.

Kind Regards
Bella

  1. Kia Ora Bella,

Wow Bella, I’m so proud of you for advocating for refugee’s rights. It’s such an important issue in the world, right now especially, and I like how you have researched your answer and supported it with facts. You’ve done an exceptional job!

New Zealand does take in a small number of refugees compared to the amount of people in our home country doesn’t it. Immigration of refugees is a very controversial topic (a topic people argue about a lot) so politicians often get a little bit caught up in all the issues and organisation it takes rather than the fact that these people need a home and we as humans should want to help them. New Zealand is one of the safest places in the world (we’re ranked in the top 5!) so it isn’t surprising they want to come here. Wouldn’t you too if you couldn’t go back to your own home? I like how you have considered their feelings and opinions. You’re being a very conscientious internet citizen!

I hope PM Ardern sees your letter too.

    Keep up the amazing work
    Shannon (SLJ)
