Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Overcoming Adversity" For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, experienced a challenge and overcame it. On your blog, recount a time when you or someone you know experienced a challenge and overcame it. One of my best friends (Amelia) was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer and has been back and forth from Starship Hospital in Auckland for the last 13 months. Amelia is such an inspiration to me and for many others. Amelia has had to deal with so many surgeries and chemo to try to make it better, she also has hundreds of beads that she showed me when I stayed at her house. She's doing schoolwork through the Central Regional Health School but missing ordinary school life.
She normally has lots of energy and loves being around people. But she still has at least six months of cancer treatment ahead of her. After that Mrs. Bennett hopes she will be in remission. After "living in a bubble" for more than a year, seeing all those helpful friends and strangers was pretty overwhelming for her and her mother too. now that we are in different parts of New Zealand I don't get to see her very much but still talk to her every now and then. Years later Amelia has fully recovered her chemo and I'm so proud of her and so thankful that she is better.
Kia Ora Bella,
ReplyDeleteAmelia sounds like an incredibly brave young woman. It’s so scary what happened to her, but great to hear she is doing so much better! Cancer can be incredibly tough on the person suffering from it as well as their family and friends. It takes a lot to overcome, and I definitely agree with you that Amelia is an inspiration to so many for overcoming her adversity.
Sometimes the hardest adversities to overcome is to defy what comes your way and stay on track and maintain a bit of normality. By the sounds of it, Amelia and her mum had a lot of support from you, friends, and the school to make sure she was okay. I can’t imagine what it would be like being in a bubble for so long, but I’d say you’re right in that it would be overwhelming to finally be able to have a little more freedom after the ordeal.
You sound like an incredibly supportive friend, and I’m super pleased to read Amelia is doing better now. It’s a great and happy way to end your blog post and keep your readers informed after sharing the story.
Keep up the incredible work, both in the blog and in your life.
