Making A Racket!

Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Making A Racket" For this activity, watch these videos about Serena and Venus Williams. On your blog, tell us three things that you learned from watching these videos, as well as one thing you would still like to know. What three things did you learn from this video?

Three Things I learned

  • Things I learnt: They were both pushing for equal pay from the tournaments themselves long before they got or they reached this point.
  • Venus whos the number top five earning female athlete doesn't even make the top one hundred and earning athletes on Forbes list.
  • Serena whos the top female athlete in the world in terms of pay comes in number fifty-one.
What I want To Know
  • Serena and Venus just need another female supporting the equal pay and they need men advocating for it also.

  1. Kia ora Bella,
That is a bit stink that women sportspeople do not earn as much as their male counterparts. I am surprised that the top earning female is fifty one on the list.
Do you think it is right for the women to be paid less, would you expect to be paid the same as men when you start working?
I would advocate for more pay for females however I wonder if it is up to the male sportsman to show their support and maybe not participate in their own events until the women are paid the same.

  2. Kia Ora Bella,

It’s so shocking to think such famous tennis players like Serena and Venus Williams don’t get paid as much as their male counterparts when they’re doing the same job! It’s a stark reminder of some of the wage disparity that continues to occur, especially in a field where greats like Billie Jean King have demonstrated that women can be just as good if not better than men.

Thankfully humanity is becoming more aware of the inequalities and there’s a greater push for equal representation and treatment. We’re very lucky to be at the forefront of this movement, especially in New Zealand where we are renowned for leading the curve in women’s rights!

You’re definitely right though in the fact that for change we need lots of support, especially from men. You make an excellent point, and you’ve answered the summer learning journey question super well!

Do you know who the top paid tennis player is? Perhaps you could look into it and find out for me.

Don’t forget to cite your images!

    Hei konā mai,
    Shannon (SLJ)
