Hello Readers,
Todays Task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Hidden Figures" For this activity we would like you to give coding a try. Click on the link for the website: code.org. If you try an activity and it is too easy, try a harder level! On your blog, post a screenshot of your completed shape. Underneath the shape tell us what you thought of the coding app. Is it good? Why/why not? Have you ever done coding before, if so what did you make was it a game?
In my opinion, at first, I found it quite difficult to make, but then I started picking it up and I managed to create a square, triangle and rectangle. This website is a great website to use if you are learning to code and once you start making simple little things like a shape you can start making really fun games to play. When I was in year five I made a penguin game and a dress up game and I'm thinking I will start to make another.
I was a pupil at Marshland School and this blog is where I shared my learning. This blog has been archived, no further content will be uploaded or added. You are welcome to continue viewing posts, however commenting has been disabled.

Apple Vs Microsoft!
Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Apple Vs Microsoft" For this activity we would like you to use your best researching skills to find three more examples of common rivalries. They can be in the sports world or not - it’s totally up to you! On your blog, describe the three rivalries that you have found. Who is involved? To gain the full 6 points for this activity, please provide a picture for each rivalry. The picture should represent the rivalry.

Three Fierce Rivalries
1. Joe Frazier versus Muhammad Ali (Race was also central to boxing’s greatest rivalry Muhammad Ali versus Joe Frazier even though both men were African American. Privately, they had been friends before their first match in 1971, but that changed after Ali both an outspoken champion of black power and a master of gaining psychological advantage went to great lengths to depict Frazier, who was largely silent on the issue of civil rights, as a patsy for the white establishment. In that first fight, Frazier retained the heavyweight championship with a decision over the previously undefeated Ali, who was returning to the ring for the second time since being stripped of the championship in 1967 for refusing army induction during the Vietnam War. In their 1973 rematch, Ali won a commanding decision over Frazier, who had earlier lost the title to George Foreman. Fought in the Philippines in 1975, the last Ali-Frazier fight, for the championship (won back from Foreman by Ali), is considered by many to be the greatest fight of all time.)
2. New Zealand All Blacks versus South Africa Springboks (South Africa’s Springboks versus New Zealand’s All Blacks, though several New Zealand players had to be declared “honorary whites” in order to be able to play in apartheid. With few exceptions, year in and year out, South Africa and New Zealand have dominated international rugby. Since their first official meeting in 1921, neither has fared well on the other’s home turf, but New Zealand became dangerous for the Springboks in other ways in 1981, when local outrage at South Africa’s apartheid policy led to widespread protests and street battles with police. South Africa was prohibited from competing in the first World Cup competitions in 1987 and 1991. Nelson Mandela was the president of South Africa when it returned to the World Cup and won it by beating New Zealand in the championship game.)
3. Nike vs. Reebok (Believe it or not, there was a brief period when Reebok was leaving Nike in the dust. It was the late ’80s, and Reebok had blown up into the biggest footwear brand in America thanks to a boom in aerobics and its iconic “Pump” design in 1991, Dee Brown won the NBA Dunk Contest in a pair of Reebok Pumps, which later caused Michael Jordan himself to warn Brown that he had ignited “the shoe wars.”)

Three Things I learned
- Things I learnt: They were both pushing for equal pay from the tournaments themselves long before they got or they reached this point.
- Venus whos the number top five earning female athlete doesn't even make the top one hundred and earning athletes on Forbes list.
- Serena whos the top female athlete in the world in terms of pay comes in number fifty-one.
What I want To Know
- Serena and Venus just need another female supporting the equal pay and they need men advocating for it also.
Miracle On The Hudson
Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Miracle On The Hudson" For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, was brave like Sully. On your blog, recount a time when you (or someone else you know) did something brave. One of my best friends (Amelia) was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer and has been back and forth from Starship Hospital in Auckland for the last 13 months. Amelia is such an inspiration to me and for many others. Amelia has had to deal with so many surgeries and chemo to try to make it better, she also has hundreds of beads that she showed me when I stayed at her house. She's doing schoolwork through the Central Regional Health School but missing ordinary school life.
She normally has lots of energy and loves being around people. But she still has at least six months of cancer treatment ahead of her. After that Mrs. Bennett hopes she will be in remission. After "living in a bubble" for more than a year, seeing all those helpful friends and strangers was pretty overwhelming for her and her mother too. now that we are in different parts of New Zealand I don't get to see her very much but still talk to her every now and then. Years later Amelia has fully recovered her chemo and I'm so proud of her and so thankful that she is better.

Concluding The Journey!
Hello Readers,
It is my time to announce that the Summer Learning Journey has now come to an end. I love that I got the chance to be able to participate in these fun activities that the Summer Learning Journey has created not only that but how these fun activities have put an impact on my learning to make it more helpful and for me to improve. This is my first time being able to incorporate in the Summer Learning Journey and I have had such a blast, I cannot wait to be able to do this again soon.
I have really felt a difference in my learning for literacy and it has made me feel more confident in so many different ways. I always learn something from these activities that I didn’t know about. Summer Learning Journey has changed my learning ways throughout the summer holidays and I am so grateful for starting this opportunity of learning. I would like to say a full thank you to everyone especially Kieryn and Mark for commenting on positive, thoughtful and helpful comments on my blog it has made me realize that I either need to go back and edit my blog post to make it more superior. All of the tasks that I managed to complete were my favorite, they were all very outstanding. In my opinion, I don't think there are any changes or improvements that the Summer Learning Journey Team needs to make. Thank you so much again, I really appreciate it!
Need For Speed!
Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Need For Speed" Speaking of fast, for this activity, we would like you to design your own fast vehicle. It can be anything! Please draw your super-fast vehicle on paper or use an app to help you. If it was me, I would make my super-fast vehicle something that I could use to get to school and home again each day! On your blog, post a picture of your speedy vehicle along with a written description of how it works. Tell your readers what your vehicle is made of, any special features, how fast it goes, and who might use your vehicle.
My Vehicle is a racing car. its special features are that it is colorful and the roof can ascend (Go up) and the doors are infinity which means that they both open up facing the sky. The colour of my car is white, the wheels are pink and black and o the inside of the car it is a peach colour with pink leather seats. This will be such an awesome vehicle to ride to school but this racing car you can use for motorsport road racing which utilizes sports cars. They may be purpose-built (Prototype). My racing car is made of new carbon fiber. In its first automotive application, this carbon fiber fabric called “Carbon skin” is made of woven carbon fibers soaked with a special epoxy resin that stabilizes the fiber structure and keeps the material soft. The speed limit of this car can reach a whopping 220 mph, and go from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds.

Try Your Own Tapa!
Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Create Your Own Tapa" For this activity please create your own tapa cloth design. You can draw your design on paper or using a drawing app such as Google Draw. On your blog, post an image (photo or screenshot) or your tapa design and describe what each part of your picture represents (means). Have you ever created your own Tapa before, if so what designs did you incorporate?
Tapa Cloth. Barkcloth, or tapa, is not a woven material, but made from bark that has been softened through a process of soaking and beating. The inner bark is taken from several types of trees or shrubs, often mulberry and fig, and designs are applied with paints and vegetable dyes of light brown, red, and black. Here is the Tapa I created. The triangles on my Tapa represent all the other different designs and the way they are made. The flower on my Tapa represents the flower that people usually in Samoa and in other countries wear these types of flowers behind their ears or around their neck.

Top Secret Street Art!
Hello Readers,
Today's Task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Top Secret Street Art" For this activity, take a look at the Christchurch street art website and choose two different pieces of artwork. Look carefully at both pieces of art, and identify similarities and differences between the two. On your blog, post screenshots of the two different pieces of art that you have chosen. Below the pictures tell us about the similarities and differences that you see in the two pieces of street art. What is your favourite street art in Christchurch?
Christchurch Street Art
These are the two beautiful street art animals that I have chosen. The first similarity I see between these two images is that they both are with their families with each other. The next similarity is that they are both animals. Now for the differences, for the first difference I see between the two is that they are both incorporated with different colours. The wolf/fox has a nice turquoise colour on each of the faces, the background of the wall is black and has dark blue clouds, colourful leaves (Purple, blue and white) and orange, red and pink spots. Next with the elephant, they are a dark and a light grey shade and have nice strokes on the nose, feet and face/head to give it more effect. The last difference by the two images is the wold/fox are facing each other in opposite directions and with the elephants they are all walking elegantly together as a family.

Dear Diary,
I thought I might give you a recap on the scariest and most bizarre day of my life.
Later that evening my mum shouted to me,
“Ashleigh it’s time for you to go to bed now”
“Fine,” I said somberly.
I half-opened the duvet cover off my bed and I jumped in it. As the sun started to slowly creep down passed the hill, I decided to read my book to help me feel tired so I could try and get some sleep. My eyes started slowly drifting off so I put my book down and placed it on my bedside cabinet.
I then alarmingly realised that I needed my essay homework for school tomorrow that needs to get marked, but it wasn’t there. I searched for hours wondering where it could be. I was pulling clothes out of my drawer and rummaging through my wardrobe, it was gone, it was nowhere to be found.
“Imagine that my things started to mysteriously disappear. One thing disappears, then another thing has gone, and another!” As hours then passed I fell into a deep sleep.
“Ouch,” I screeched,
I woke up aghast as the clock struck midnight, something very Immense and bulky had come tumbling over me while I was trying to sleep. Soon after I started to hear loud boisterous noises coming from the attic downstairs. I quickly shot out of my bed quivering in fear, so I started to gradually promenade through my hallway and down to the attic. At that moment In my head, I was starting to think…
“What or who was making all of these loud booming noises?”
To myself, I thought it was a very mysterious day.
“All of my school subjects have gone and my clothes”
After I finished school I peered closely as these strange people dressed in black were following me home, that’s all I can remember!
As time still continued, each slow step I took through the hallway the floorboards started to creak vociferously.
At that instant I make it to the attic, spiderwebs were scattered all through the oak wood that was situated around me. My delicate fragile hands were gliding through the stretchy, sticky, web and it started spreading onto my clothes without me noticing.
As I’m trying to figure out what is going on, the lights in the attic were starting to flicker on and off making the electricity in the whole house go off, I peer out the stainless steel window the sky was pitch black with golden stars sparkling in the far distance radiantly.
Next minute as I’m lazily walking down the overcast, murky stairs I find a candle that is lying down on the top step sitting on a small glass plate with a box of lighters placed beside it. I calmly pick the candle up and realise that it has flooded with candle wax everywhere. I deliberately grab the lighters and graze the lighter over the matchbox making the room light up with sparks.
When I reach the bottom of the stairs, all I see is an ancient door just standing there. Then within a millisecond, the door opens for me leading me into the secret passage of the attic.
For a quick moment, I started wondering suspiciously.
“I’m sure that there were more boxes of items down here, where has everything gone?” I walked around examining the room cautiously trying to see if I can find everything.
“Everything has gone”
Piece by piece, as I’m watching closely the items in the attic was starting to disappear by floating in mid-air.
In the far distance, a bright portal shone, sending soft, golden beams of light out across the evening sky. As the light kissed the dark, gloomy clouds they blushed, becoming pink illuminations.
All that was left of the attic was the door. It was still open. There was still time for me to get out, I was trapped. There was no time, the portal whorled me around wildly as I’m trying to pull myself out.
I spot from the far distance those strange men that were following me home from school.
“Help me please!” I screamed. They didn’t answer until they replied with,
“That was your time know it’s ours”.
“No” I screamed,
“Please”
They still stood there discreetly, but as the portal was whorling me in, a rope was hanging from the roof, so I emerged myself and grabbed the rope firmly and pulled myself out.
As the tips of my foot lightly touched the ground, I sped across the room, up the stairs and slammed the door shut. Here to fore in a blink of an eye, I see if they’re still standing there,
“They’re Gone!” I said joyfully. I still was curious about why they were following me.
I slowly opened the door and peeked my head through the door,
“Wait a minute I can still see them”
I walk into the attic fierce pretending not to be afraid of them so I apologise
“What did I do to you?” I said confused.
“Am I Hallucinating?”
“The men in black still stood in silence.

Screen Legends! What Are Your Future Plans?
Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Screen Legends" For this activity, we would love to know more about your interests (passions) and your future plans. What do you think that you would like to do when you are older? Do you have a specific job in mind? On your blog, please tell us about your future plans (i.e. what you plan to do when you finish high school or college). Would you prefer to start working right away or to continue with your studies?
When I grow up after I graduate high school I want to learn the areas around being a doctor at university. Just to get into medical school, the prerequisites are biology, biochemistry, chemistry and physics. The better you are at those subjects, the better your chance of being accepted. Knowledge and training being an accepted standard for providing medical services, it doesn't end there if you want to be a good doctor.
If I want to be a doctor I have to move all the way down to Dunedin to go to university their. When I get to Dunedin I will most likely flat with someone so I'm not having to travel back and forth. Soon after I will continue to study really hard over the years to earn my I have lots of different passions that I like to do whether that is an activity, playing outside. As I'm in university I will choose to learn how to be a surgeon. The reason why I would like to learn how to be a surgeon/doctor is to help save other peoples lives and for them to recover and feel heaps better. I like to work activities that have to do with ideas and thinking. I like to search for facts and figure out solutions to problems mentally.

Twenty-Seven Names
Twenty Seven Names is a contemporary (current) New Zealand fashion label that is also influential. The founders of the company are two friends, Rachel Easting and Anjali Burnett. Rachel and Anjali met when they were at primary school. When they left school, Anjali studied fashion design and Rachel studied art before they set up their own business designing and making clothing. Where possible they employ young women and they keep as much of their production (making) in New Zealand as possible. After studying art and fashion respectively the pair began working on small scale projects before launching their brand ‘twenty-seven names’.
The label name is a homage to the list of 27 people who helped to get their label off the ground. Proudly made in New Zealand since its inception, the brand’s values lie in a commitment to sustainability, ethical production and supporting local industry. I think Twenty-Seven Names is a great name to have for your logo because it represents so many beautiful things and especially that New Zealand had help come up with the name. I also think this designer company in New Zealand is awesome, there are so many creative and pretty clothing items that the Twenty-Seven Names company has come up with.

Feast Or Famine
Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "Feast Or Famine" For this activity, we would like to know if you would consider doing a 20 or 40 Hour Famine to raise money for charity. On your blog, tell us whether, or not, you would participate in 20 or 40 Hour Famine. If you have already participated in a 20 or 40 Hour Famine, please share your experience, including why you decided to participate and some highlights and challenges of the experience. To get full points, please provide at least six sentences. Have you ever participated in a twenty or forty hours feminine challenge to help raise money for a certain charity?
I have never participated in a twenty or forty-hour feminine challenge before to help raise money for a certain charity. I am thinking of doing a twenty-hour "No eating food" challenge when I get the chance too. Originally the famine challenge was about giving up food for 40 hours. The aim was to walk in someone else’s shoes, to try to understand what hunger feels like. This is still one of the most popular options! To help complete this challenge ...
- Drink plenty of water, fruit juice or tea. I don’t recommend drinking coffee as it is a stimulant and it will dehydrate you.
- Feel free to eat energy sweets (like barley sugars) occasionally every two to four hours.
- Try to take it easy during the 20-40 Hour Famine weekend. I don’t recommend playing sport or doing too much physical activity while fasting.
- When you finish the 20-40 Hour Famine, ease your way back to normal eating by having something light and healthy, like a salad or fruit.
- If you’re diabetic or have a medical condition, I don’t recommend giving up food as it may not be safe, but you can still participate by giving up something like furniture, talking or TV.

Girl Power! Who Do You Think Has Made An Impact Of Being A Role Model, What Did The Person Do?
Hello Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey is "Girl Power" For this activity, we would like to choose one role model and tell us about them. What makes them a role model? They can be people you know personally, people you have seen on television or the internet, people you have heard on the radio or people you have heard about from a friend or a family member. You do not have to know them personally. On your blog, tell us about your chosen role model. Please be sure to tell us why you think they are a role model. Who do you think has made an impact on your life or someone else's of being a role model, and what did they do?
One day after school, on October 9, 2012, Malala was taking the bus home with her friend. Suddenly, a man with a gun boarded the bus. He asked "Who is Malala?" and said he would kill them all if they didn't tell him. Then he shot Malala in the head.

You do not have to know them personally. On your blog, tell us about your chosen role model. Please be sure to tell us why you think they are a role model. Who do you think has made an impact on your life or someone else's of being a role model, and what did they do?
Malala Yousafzai
The daughter of an outspoken social activist and educator, Yousafzai was an excellent student. Her father who established and administered the school she attended, Khushal Girls High School and College in the city of Mingora encouraged her to follow in his path. In 2007 the Swat valley, once a vacation destination, was invaded. Led by Maulana Fazlullah, the Taliban started destroying and shutting down girls’ schools, banning women from any active role in society, and carrying out suicide bombings.
Yousafzai and her family fled the region for their safety, but they returned when tensions and violence eased. Around the time Malala was ten years old, the Taliban began to take over the region where she lived. The Taliban were strict Muslims who demanded that all people follow Islamic Sharia law. They said that women were to stay at home. If a woman left her home, she was to wear a burqa (a garment that covers the body, head, and face) and must be accompanied by a male relative. The Taliban were not happy with Malala. Even though the fighting had ended and the schools were open again, there were still Taliban throughout the city. Malala was told to speaking out and received numerous death threats.
One day after school, on October 9, 2012, Malala was taking the bus home with her friend. Suddenly, a man with a gun boarded the bus. He asked "Who is Malala?" and said he would kill them all if they didn't tell him. Then he shot Malala in the head.
As the joint winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, Malala is a powerful role model for girls growing up in Pakistan and those living in countries where cultural, political and economic factors prevent them from living happy, secure and productive lives to speak up and speak out. I think Malala Yousafzai is a role model to the whole world for pushing through everything she has been through, not only that but she strives and is a very influential person that speaks for her own and other people's rights.

K-Pop Heroes! What Is Your Opinion On BTS?
Hello Readers,
Today's week four task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "K-Pop Heroes" For this activity, please watch this CBS Sunday Morning Special about BTS. On your blog, tell us your opinion on BTS. Please don’t just say whether or not you like them, but tell us what it is that you like (or don’t like) about them. I haven't really heard of BTS often but on some reviews, people really like and some dislike everyone has their own opinions. Do you like BTS, If so which is your favourite song and who is your favourite singer?
In my opinion, I think that BTS sounds like a really amazing Korean K-Pop group that has grown so much in not only Korea but also in America and around the world. The K-pop boyband has become a global phenomenon, so it’s not too much of a surprise, but it’s a huge honour to be on the list, which charts the most influential leaders, artists, pioneers, icons and titans.
Each person on the list has a tribute penned by a fan, friend or peer, and BTS’s Boy With Luv collaborator Halsey was in charge of the ode to RM, Jimin, J-Hope, Jin, V, Suga and Jungkook. She wrote: ‘How exactly does one accomplish world domination? Surely it takes remarkable talent, charm, kindness, altruism and dedication. I like how at their concerts BTS help people to be happy and get out from their depressed self, helps people to have a little bit of hope and faith that they can do it also. And that what makes BTS inspiring. I would most certainly consider BTS and amazing world wide boy band and by the sounds of it, they are really influential and inspiring people.

Hi Readers,
Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is to learn more about ‘Shakespearean English’ - the version of English that Shakespeare used to write his plays. To do this, please write a short recount about what you did this morning in regular (2019) English, and then use this translating tool to turn it into Shakespearean English. On your blog, share both your English and Shakespearean translation of your recount. Have you ever learned about the areas around Shakespear?
(English Version) This morning when I woke up I stretched and promenaded to my closet to choose a lovely outfit to wear today. Once I chose my outfit, I then headed out of my room and went straight to the bathroom to have a nice hot, steaming shower. Once I was out of the shower I went to go grab some breakfast to eat with my family and my dad asked if I would like an egg on toast. Soon after I had finished breakfast I went to brush my teeth to make them nice sparkly and clean and walked out the door which was really chilly outside and I went to start my day.

BookWorms!
Hello Readers,
I have finished week three tasks and moving towards week four. Today's task with the Summer Learning Journey Programme is "BookWorms" For this activity, design a book cover for your favourite book. You will need to think about what needs to be on the cover (the title, author, illustrator), pictures, colour, etc. Please create all of the images yourself (draw or photograph) rather than using images that you find online. On your blog, share the book cover you have designed. This task was so much fun because I love to create all sorts of different drawings and designs! Have you ever designed your own book cover, if so what book was it?
My favourite novel of all time is "A Dogs Way Home" For the book cover it has a small dog sitting in a shoe with laces in her mouth. This book cover took me a while to draw and to add all of the features. Here is my book cover I hope that you enjoy!

Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein was a scientist in the early 1900s. He came up with some of the most important discoveries and theories in all of science. Some people consider him to be one of the smartest people of the 20th century. His face and name are often used as the picture or description of the consummate scientist. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879. He spent most of his childhood in Munich, Germany. His father had an electronics company and Albert learned a lot about science and electronics from his dad. He really liked math and wanted to pursue math and science in school. He didn't finish school in Germany but ended up his schooling in Switzerland. Albert Einstein would later move back to Bern, Germany and work in the patent office.
Albert Einstein is thought to have been a genius, and he is considered one of the world's greatest thinkers. Although he isn't known for inventions, as with Thomas Edison or Nikola Tesla, Einstein's theories and ideas continue to exert influence today. He spent much of his life researching his theories of relativity, investigating space, time, matter, and energy. Einstein proposed his theory of light, stating that all light is composed of tiny packets of energy, called photons. He suggested these photons were particles but also had wave-like properties, a totally new idea at the time. He also spent some time outlining the emission of electrons from metals as they were hit with large electric pulses, like lightning. He expanded on this concept of the photoelectric effect.
